Welcome to Nansledan: Cornwall's Thriving New Newquay Sibling

Pastel-hued houses, an urban farm and a buzzing high street, the coastal town of Nansledan promises to be a jewel in Cornwall’s crown.

On the north coast of Cornwall you’ll find Newquay, a bohemian coastal town fêted by surfers and students alike for its expansive beaches and plethora of bars. Yet even the most beautiful of areas can suffer from deprivation, and such is the case here. To remedy this and to help strengthen the local economy, Cornwall Council commissioned The Prince’s Foundation to create a 540-acre urban extension to Newquay, called Nansledan, which is owned by the Duchy of Cornwall.

The aim is for Nansledan to become a thriving town with more than 4,000 new homes, a high street, urban farm, church, school and more. True to The Prince’s Foundation’s vision, the expansion will champion sustainable development in order to benefit the community, both environmentally and economically.

Nansledan will be built in eight stages or ‘quarters’. The Foundation wants to ensure that each quarter has its own character, while also retaining its distinctive Nansledan identity. Construction of the first phase, called Trewolek, began in 2014 and will boast 126 new homes, employment space and the first part of the Newquay strategic route – a new road that will traverse Nansledan and form a key link to the Aerohub Enterprise Zone at Cornwall Airport Newquay. The second phase, Kosti Veur, is now well under way too.

If that wasn’t impressive enough, Cornwall Council has also approved planning permission for a new primary school, 800 new homes, a high street with local shops, offices, a Methodist church, recreation field, orchard, allotments, an estate yard and an urban farm. Watch this space.
