MSc Sustainable Engineering Management for International Development

This cross-disciplinary programme at Swansea University, with some taught elements, has a strong focus on applied sustainable engineering projects in real life environments. Designed to develop practitioners who can think rapidly and flexibly, acting in the absence of complete information to support and improve the quality of life through engineering solutions.

This course aims to create solutions for the multiple challenges faced by the Global South, where the majority of the world’s construction is now located. In the face of issues such as extreme poverty, dealing with the threats of manmade climate change and loss of biodiversity and natural habitats, we aim to develop a new generation of practitioners who can think and act rapidly, flexibly and often without complete information to support and improve the quality of life for both urban and rural dwellers of the future. Such practitioners will need to understand and be able to enhance environments through myriad engineering issues and develop designs in collaboration with the communities they serve. This cross-disciplinary programme will enable a new generation of leaders to come up with practical engineering solutions to build in resilience for local communities facing rapid urbanisation all over the world.

Qualifications needed

A minimum of BEng/BSc/BA 2.1 (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline is required, with IELTS 6.5 with 5.5 minimum in each area of assessment (or equivalent SELT).

Applicants will be interviewed (in person or by Skype) with dates for interviews anticipated between the end of May and the end of June.

Ideal candidates

Students will be recruited from a range of backgrounds, including STEM, International Development, Politics, Law, Business (but other areas considered) from UK/EU and Overseas. From the outset you will be given a specific role to work on in the project so need to be able to work exceptionally well as part of a dynamic team.
